Major Ski Resorts
Hakuba Valley is famous for its collection of world-class ski resorts. Most resorts are covered by the "Hakuba Valley" all-mountain pass, but you can also buy single-resort tickets.
🚌 Bus Access Note: From our lodge's nearby "Alpine Chalet" stop, resorts like Happo-One, Goryu/47, and Iwatake are easily accessible. Resorts further north, like Tsugaike and Cortina, may require a transfer or a short walk to a different bus line (see Lodge Info tab).
Happo-One
The largest and most famous resort in Hakuba, known for its challenging terrain and its 1998 Winter Olympics history. Great for intermediate to advanced skiers.
1-Day Pass (Approx): ¥8,400~
Hakuba 47 & Goryu
Two connected resorts offering a huge variety of terrain. Hakuba 47 has an excellent terrain park, while Goryu has wide, beginner-friendly slopes at its base.
1-Day Pass (Approx): ¥7,700~
Iwatake
Known for its stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Northern Alps. It has great intermediate runs and a new mountaintop cafe, "Hakuba Mountain Harbor."
1-Day Pass (Approx): ¥5,000
Tsugaike Kogen
Fantastic for beginners and intermediates, with wide, gentle slopes at the base. It also offers advanced courses and extensive backcountry access higher up.
1-Day Pass (Approx): ¥5,900
Hakuba Cortina
Famous for its incredible powder snow (Japow!) and tree skiing. It's connected to the Hakuba Norikura resort. A must-visit for powder hounds.
1-Day Pass (Approx): ¥5,000
Lift Tickets - How to Buy
- Online: Most resorts offer a significant discount for buying tickets online in advance. (e.g., Goryu/47 is ¥7,700 online vs ¥9,500 at the window).
- At the Resort: You can always buy tickets on the day at the resort ticket windows, but it is the most expensive option.
- Hakuba Valley Pass: If you plan to ski multiple resorts, the Hakuba Valley Pass is a good option. It includes free use of the main shuttle buses.
Getting to Hakuba (From Airports)
Arriving in Hakuba
Arrival Stops: You can choose to arrive at Hakuba Train Station (白馬駅), Hakuba Bus Terminal (Happo Bus Terminal), or Snow Peak Land Station.
Funny Inn is centrally located, so all these stops are convenient for accessing the lodge.
1. Shinkansen (Bullet Train) + Bus (Fastest)
This is the fastest way. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno Station to Nagano (approx. 90-110 minutes). From Nagano Station (East Exit, Stop #26), take the "Alpico" express bus to Hakuba (approx. 75-90 minutes).
2. Direct Highway Bus (Easiest)
Several companies (like Nagano Snow Shuttle or Alpico Bus) run direct buses from Tokyo (Shinjuku, Haneda, Narita) to Hakuba. It takes longer (approx. 5-6 hours) but is direct, cheaper, and handles luggage easily.
3. Private Charter
For groups, a private charter can be pre-booked to take you directly from the airport to our front door.
Getting Around Hakuba
Hakuba Valley Shuttle Bus
During the winter season, a comprehensive shuttle bus system runs between all the major resorts and villages. If you have a Hakuba Valley pass, this bus is free. Otherwise, the fare is ¥800 per ride (online ticket purchase only). (See our "Lodge Info" tab for local stop details!)
Taxis
Taxis are available but can be expensive and hard to find during peak times. It's best to book in advance. The local English-speaking taxi number is 0261-72-2221.
Rental Car
Renting a car (make sure it's 4WD with snow tires) gives you flexibility, but be cautious of road conditions. An international driver's permit is required.
Winter Attractions & Day Trips
Besides skiing and snowboarding, there are other amazing things to see in the area. These often make for a great rest day.
Jigokudani Snow Monkeys
A world-famous park where you can see Japanese macaques (monkeys) bathing in a natural hot spring. This is a full-day trip from Hakuba, but truly unforgettable.
Hakuba Onsens (Hot Springs)
Relax your sore muscles in one of Hakuba's many natural hot springs. Many public bathhouses (like Mimizuku no Yu or Sato no Yu) offer this for a small entry fee (approx ¥600-700).
Snowshoeing / Snowmobiling
For a different kind of alpine adventure, explore the peaceful backcountry forests on a guided snowshoe or snowmobile tour. Several local companies offer tours.
